Joe Formicola

Joe Formicola

President and Chief Engineer

Joe founded Caelynx in 2005 and currently serves as President and Chief Engineer of the company. He has over 30 years combined technical and management experience in R&D and engineering consulting environments within the automotive, heavy industrial equipment, aerospace, and consumer products industry sector. His experience has given him unique insight and understanding of product development processes. This knowledge enables him to help his clients feel very comfortable with complex engineering problems, and successfully help develop their products on time and within their target budget.

Joe is passionate about providing high-end Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) services using advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods to predict product performance. He has particular expertise in developing and applying advanced analysis methods in vehicle crash dynamics, structural noise, vibration and acoustics analysis, powertrain analysis, and correlation with physical testing.  Joe provides the technical strategy for all engineering consulting projects. He also mentors and oversees the company’s engineering managers.

Prior to founding Caelynx, Joe was Vice President at Hoff & Associates, Inc., a successful & respected engineering consulting company. In 12 years of service, he increased top line revenues twenty fold, growing it to $6Mill. Prior to that, Joe worked for almost a decade for automotive and heavy equipment OEMs such as Ford Motor Company, Caterpillar and Chrysler Motor Corporation in technical positions related to product development, finite element analysis and manufacturing.

A native of Michigan, Joe received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. In addition, he completed various graduate level courses in FEA theory and its applications at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He speaks English and German fluently.

Hans Steiner

Hans Steiner

Director of Business Development

Hans joined Caelynx in 2009 as Business Development Director. He has over 20 years of business development experience in both high and low technology industries, including food-service franchising, real estate investing, dot.com start-ups, renewable and thermal energy development and mechanical engineering services.

Based at company headquarters in Ann Arbor, Hans oversees all of the sales and marketing activities in the organization, and connects company resources with client’s needs. Prior to joining Caelynx, as part of his worldwide assignments, he lived in Berlin, Germany for 3 years. In Berlin, Hans performed international finance acquisition for project-financed power plant developments in emerging economies.

A native of Michigan, Hans received his Undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit, a certificate of study from the Berlin School of Economics & Law, and an MBA in International Business from the Ecole des Ponts Paris Tech in Paris, France. In his spare time, Hans enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family.

Robert Baack

Robert Baack

Account Manager

Robert joined Caelynx in 2013 as part of the business development team.  Robert is currently based out of company headquarters in Ann Arbor, MI.

Originally from Michigan, Robert received his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Engineering Sciences from Michigan State University in 2004.  Prior to joining Caelynx, he took on a challenging role as the Sales and Marketing Director/Practice Development Representative for a private medical practice just outside of Atlanta, GA where he helped to turn the business into a multimillion dollar company. His technical engineering background along with his sales and marketing experience make him the ideal team member for Caelynx and its clients.

In his spare time, Robert enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

John Huhn

John Huhn

Engineering Manager

John joined Caelynx in 2009. As an Engineering Manager, John is focused on project management, maintaining and developing strong client relationships, and managing internal technical resources.

John has over 12 years of engineering consulting work experience. He has worked on over 1500 projects in various engineering disciplines and industries including Automotive, Aerospace and Medical Devices. He is a seasoned professional capable of quickly evaluating technical hurdles and recommending pragmatic and accurate engineering solutions.

John has a strong background in linear and non-linear dynamics. He received his Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Western Michigan University. In his personal time, John enjoys biking, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Bill Webster

Bill Webster

Project Engineer

Bill joined the Caelynx team in 2010.  As a project engineer, he is focused on providing creative, cost-effective solutions to challenging technical problems.

Bill has over 10 years of CAE expertise, with consultation experience spanning many industries: automotive, aerospace, medical, and consumer product.  He is well-versed in several engineering disciplines and software packages, ranging from non-linear statics/dynamics and fatigue to topology/topography optimization and FEA process development.

Bill earned his Undergraduate degree from Albion College where he majored in Chemistry and Economics.  In his personal time, Bill enjoys playing golf, camping, and traveling.

Zach Yates

Zach Yates

Project Engineer

Zach joined Caelynx in 2007 and is the company’s in-house meshing expert. He has also gained valuable experience as an onsite analysis specialist traveling to many Automotive OEMs and Tier1 suppliers located inside the US and Europe.

Zach completed his Undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts, with a focus, on Music from the University of Michigan. His visual arts and musical background give him an upper edge in creating aesthetic, detailed and pragmatic CAE models and project reports. In his spare time, his interests include science fiction and cosmology.

Carl Osterwisch

Carl Osterwisch

Technical Manager

Carl joined Caelynx in early 2016 following over 20 years of engineering development experience at other companies ranging from OEM to start-ups. Only half of his previous employers have gone out of business. Carl provides technical mentoring and project leadership at Caelynx and heads the software support services. He enjoys helping people. He is a certified instructor for Simulia and has conducted classes for Abaqus and FEMFAT.

Carl has extensive powertrain experience guiding the design of complex components including cylinder head, block, connecting rods, pistons, and others. He is passionate about solving challenging engineering problems using numerical analysis tools for metal fatigue, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. This foundation of solid engineering skills is applicable to a broad range of applications.

Carl received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona where he worked in the heat transfer laboratory to design and build test equipment for electronics cooling experiments. Outside of Caelynx Carl enjoys kayaking, mountain biking, and spending time with his wife and kids.

Carl Howarth

Carl Howarth

Account Manager

Carl joined Caelynx in 2012 to support business development activities on the East coast of the United States. Carl’s 20 years of professional work experience spans structural and functional applications of thermoplastics and composites. He has been working with plastics materials suppliers and end-users to develop innovative, cost savings applications for these materials, and is considered an expert in metal replacement. His key skill sets include concept development and validation with structural FEA, failure analysis, and teaching technical topics that include metal replacement, thermoplastic design, and introduction to thermoplastics.

Located in central Pennsylvania, he serves the Eastern seaboard and mid Atlantic states as a representative of Caelynx. Prior to joining Caelynx, Carl was an independent consultant for 14 years in Detroit, Michigan, where he focused on cost reduction and mass savings for automotive clients.

Carl received his Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master’s degree in Materials from Drexel University. In his personal time, Carl enjoys wildlife photography, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Rob Hurlston

Rob Hurlston

Project Engineer

Rob joined Caelynx in 2015 after having moved to the US from his native England a couple of years earlier. Rob has a strong background in Materials, with a specialism in Metallurgy and Structural Integrity Engineering. His industrially based doctorate and subsequent post-docs in Nuclear Materials Engineering saw him accumulate over a decade of real-world experience in collaboration with Serco, the University of Manchester (UK) and their partners. These included key players in the European nuclear industry such as Amec, Rolls-Royce, EDF and Fraser Nash as well as a host of partner universities. Rob has presented much of his work at a number of prestigious international conferences and has also published several journal papers.

As a Project Engineer at Caelynx, Rob has worked, and taken lead, on a diverse array of projects across a range of industries. This has allowed him to sharpen his analytical proficiency, particularly in the fields of linear and non-linear stress analysis, dynamics, heat transfer analysis and optimization.

Rob holds a 1st class Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Enterprise Management along with his doctorate, all of which were completed at the University of Manchester. Rob is a big football fan (the type where you kick it with your feet) and an avid golfer. He also enjoys skiing (both jet and snow), hiking and playing the guitar, as well as spending time with his family.

Astitva Tripathi

Astitva Tripathi

Technical Specialist

Astitva joined Caelynx as a technical specialist in 2015 after completing his PhD from Purdue University. At Caelynx he has been involved in projects involving nonlinear statics/dynamics, coupled electrical-thermal, fluid-structure interaction and durability fatigue type of analysis.

Astitva obtained his Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Engineering Design from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, during which time his work largely focused on using modern control theory to solve a broad range of engineering problems. He then obtained his PhD in Mechanical engineering from Purdue University where he attempted to understand some aspects of nonlinear structural vibrations and the interplay between topology optimization and nonlinear dynamic performance of structures.

Randy Gaiser

Director of Product Development

Randy joined Caelynx in 2016 as the Director of Product Development. He brings to Caelynx more than 25 years of experience designing and developing products. His diverse background spans several industries and applications, ranging from start-ups to Tier1 suppliers and international consultancies.

Randy started his career as a design engineer and progressed to leading design teams and program management groups. This progression has afforded him the unique perspective of developing new products, understanding the engineering challenges as well as the budgetary constraints and market requirements. He is an advocate of process driven approaches, and detail planning, as a means of managing innovation.

Randy is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Dearborn campus, with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has been awarded numerous patents and awards for the various products he has contributed to over his career.

Eric Doberstein

Eric Doberstein

Director, Eastern Region

Eric joined Caelynx in 2017 with the assignment of growing our Simulia sales and product development consulting.  He has deep curiosity about engineering design problems and a thorough understanding of how design technologies can be applied to those problems.  He has over 25 years of experience with performance simulation methods as applied to product development projects.  In addition to simulation methods, Eric has experience with other technologies such as 3D scanning, surface modeling, 3D printing, voxel modeling and haptic systems.   He gained those experiences by working on development projects for medical modeling for prostheses, electro mechanical devices, engines, drivetrains, body design, composites, molding, material sciences, 3D software product management and factory automation.

Eric completed a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering, from University of Illinois, Chicago. Within engineering he specialized in machine design, analytical and numerical methods.  Before settling into engineering he did 3 years of art school, completed a minor in music, studied economics, rebuilt performance engines and worked as machinist.  Outside of business he enjoys a solid marriage, watching their 3 kids start their careers and daily walking meditations in the woods of New England.

Ian McCarthy

Ian McCarthy

Sales and Marketing Coordinator

Ian joined Caelynx in 2016 and is the Sales and Marketing Coordinator. Ian is currently based out of the company headquarters in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Ian earned his degree in Marketing from Eastern Michigan University. As a recent college graduate, Ian is able to bring new knowledge and insight to the Caelynx team and has become a valuable asset to the company.

In his free time, Ian also enjoys golfing, watching movies/TV shows, studying UFO activity and hanging out with friends and family.
